A wellbeing crisis

Good mental and physical health and wellbeing is critical, yet mindfulness tools and techniques are not accessible to everyone to help them in times of need. The community groups we work with are particularly vulnerable to social isolation, crisis situations and lower mental and physical health and wellbeing.

With 1 in 5 children aged 8-25 likely to have a mental health problem, wellbeing tools and resources are more important than ever to help the next generation calm and regulate when they need to. Mothers are also particularly vulnerable to perinatal mood disorders and post natal depression affects 1 in 10 women. However, yoga has been found to have positive impacts on mood, stress, pain and social relationships and it is our mission to spread the benefits with these communities that need it most.

All people deserve access to the Ancient teachings, modern interpretations of yoga and other mindfulness practices; together we can share it with all, and help communities breath.

Our impact

Yoga in Action is a training and mentoring project which nurtures and supports specialist practitioners to facilitate positive health and wellbeing across local social networks.

Through an active, practice-based 6-week programme, each practitioner will support vulnerable community groups to improve access to wellbeing, belonging and yoga for residents in Norfolk.

Our Yoga in Action practitioners will be trained to deliver a specialist yoga programme in one of 3 key areas of need; yoga for children, for pregnant mums and baby & postnatal yoga.

We plan to reach and support at least 240 more individuals this year as part of the programme, with each practitioner supporting 10-20 young people or mothers over the 6 week period.

What we did in 2023

Last year we provided accessible yoga and wellbeing workshops to over 200 individuals, with the aim of improving resilience and wellbeing by empowering families and the next generation of young people. In the post-Covid landscape of worsening youth mental health, we focused on teaching children and young people an understanding of physiological and biological wellbeing, offering usable resilience tools so our kids have a ‘go-to toolbox’ they can use to self-calm and self-regulate whenever they need to.

Each session supported participants or family groups to think and care more deeply about health and safety from an anatomy and physiology perspective, and to cultivate a more positive mindset, with improved decision making skills and tools to maintain wellbeing. Sessions with young people focused on resilience training and self-care using imaginative and creative themes and content.

Key outcomes

  • Our programme will support the physical and mental health and wellbeing of young people and families across Norfolk by sharing the benefits of yoga, mindful movement, breathwork and sharing circles with those that otherwise might not be able to access these resources.

  • We are creating high impact and sustainable social change in local communities by equipping practitioners, schools, charities and community hubs with the knowledge and understanding to share yoga with the people that need it most on their doorstep.

  • Our aim is to empower by training and mentoring practitioners to feel confident and resourced to share yoga with vulnerable groups, and to continue to do so after the 6 week programme ends. We will create a growing network of Yoga in Action practitioners, amplifying the impact we are able to have across the region.
